"The Marugg grass scythe proves itself an excellent tool. It is the most satisfying hand tool that I have ever used. In tough grass it cuts a little less uniformly than the power scythe. In all other ways, in my opinion, it is a better tool because, it is light, it handles gracefully & comfortably even on steep ground, it is far less dangerous, it is quiet & makes no fumes, it is much more adaptable. In rank growth one narrows the cut & shortens the stroke. It always starts - provided the user will start. Aside from reasonable skill & care in use, there are no maintenance problems. It requires no fuel or oil. It runs on breakfast. It’s cheaper to buy than most weed eaters & is cheaper to use than any other power mower. And best of all it’s good exercise."
- Wendell Berry, author of A GOOD SCYTHE
"Scything is simple; it is relaxing too. It is no wonder the people of yesteryear had very little problem with stress.
The quiet rhythm melts away tension; swish, cut, swish, cut, swish...
If I close my eyes it is easy to imagine myself back in time -- a bird singing to the sky, the wind whispering to the trees, the splash of a horse pawing the water,
the lowing of a cow calling her calf. Would you like to time travel? I'll teach you how."

These superb Marugg Blades are custom made using our 130 year old pattern
by a company in Austria that has been making blades since 1540.
These blades are hammered to a fine edge that is easy to honed razor sharp.
Enjoy an unusually smooth grain harvest this fall.
You'll be thrilled at the performance of this amazing tool.
Genuine Austrian Blade makes this hand scythe-sickle a pleasure to use. It is made from the same steel as the famous Marugg Scythe Blades. This is a right handed tool.
Used for clearing around tight areas after scything, and requires somewhat less bending than our hand sickle.

Marugg Blades are custom made for us using our 130 year old pattern by a company in Austria that has been making blades since 1540. These blades are hammered to a fine edge made to stay razor sharp for a long time (they are not that sharp when we ship them for safety reasons). Do not grind these blades. They last longer and work better if you hammer and hone them. Instructions are included.

Back by popular demand, we are offering (again, Marugg has historically offered this snath) a curved steel snath, imported from Austria and manufactured by our blade manufacturer, Franz de Paul Schrockenfux..
The man made stone is used after peening (new blades are already peened, but not sharp). It gives a good edge, but for grass mowing - you'll want the natural stone also.
The Natural stone is similar in hardness to an American 'arkansas black', and gives a surgical sharp razor edge. It is used in the field after 10-15 minutes of mowing, when you feel the blade start 'pulling' instead of 'slicing'.

After many sharpenings with a stone, the thin part of blade will be worn away. Marugg blades are designed to have a hammered edge. Grinding wastes metal and makes your scythe wear out sooner than it needs to!
People who earn their living with a hammer (carpenters and blacksmiths) will prefer the hammer and anvil set. It is less expensive and allows them the pleasure of seeing the blade take shape as each blow of the hammer lands in the perfect position.

The Scythe Book: Mowing Hay, Cutting Weeds, and Harvesting Small Grains with Hand Tools [2005 Paperback]
In the last few years, interest in the scythe has grown remarkably; and so have the sales of The Scythe Book. Now Peter Vido, who has written two outstanding articles for Small Farmer’s Journal on the use of the scythe, has contributed an addendum for this book on the practical use of the scythe based on his own extensive research and experience.
